Podcasting meets the sitcom world again with DEADLINE reporting that ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a new situation comedy based on the GIMLET MEDIA podcast "STARTUP."
ZACH BRAFF ("SCRUBS," "GARDEN STATE") is attached to the project as star and director, working with veteran sitcom producer MATT TARSES; the show, produced by SONY TV and DAVIS ENTERTAINMENT, would focus on a man with a family who quits his job to start a business. The podcast followed GIMLET founder ALEX BLUMBERG's odyssey in launching the podcast network.
BLUMBERG and his GIMLET MEDIA colleagues CHRIS GILIBERTI and MATT LIEBER will serve as Executive Producers along with BRAFF, TARSES, and DAVIS ENTERTAINMENT's JOHN DAVIS and JOHN FOX. The show's title may have to change due to conflict with another "STARTUP" series at SONY's CRACKLE.
IFC's "MARON" (also a sitcom) and "COMEDY BANG! BANG!," BBC AMERICA's "THE NERDIST," and NBC SPORTS NETWORK's "MEN IN BLAZERS" were among previous adaptations of podcasts to television.
