A comprehensive study of commuting patterns is out from the TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES. The good news for radio is that commutes continue to get longer, and the number of people spending 60-90 minutes in their cars one way is up sharply. On the down side, baby boomers are about to start exiting the highways via retirement, and many are already out of the picture because they're working from home.
The biggest commuter category is suburb to suburb. As for those especially long commutes, the study found that 11% of commuters working in a center city arrive there every day from a completely different metro area.
