Next year's EDWARD R. MURROW AWARDS will include two new categories for professional entrants, five new categories for student work, and some changes in eligibility rules for two other categories, the RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION announced TODAY (10/25).
The new categories are Excellence In Innovation -- an award for innovative use of content, engagement, technology, and/or audience experience -- and Excellence In Social Media, judged by both the quality of journalism and the quantity and quality of user engagement. In addition, student categories are being expanded to include awards for Excellence In Audio Newscast, Audio Reporting, Video Newscast, Video Reporting, and Digital Reporting.
"Newsrooms across the country are finding new and better ways to tell stories every day," said RTDNA Executive Director MIKE CAVENDER. "When great journalism is presented to audiences in creative and engaging ways, we want to recognize those efforts."
In addition, radio stations are now eligible for the Excellence in Video category and television stations are eligible for the Excellence in Sound category. The changes also include a new entry fee structure intended to make entry more affordable.
"This is the first comprehensive review and revision of the MURROWS rules and categories since 2009," said RTDNA Awards Committee Chairman DAN SHELLEY. "We're proud to honor the very best electronic journalism in all forms."
