New research conducted by EMARKETER.COM found that radio remains as the go-to music listening format and device for U.S. consumers. Its OCTOBER research found that almost half of time spent listening to music happens on AM/FM radio, followed by owned music and then streaming platforms such as PANDORA and SPOTIFY.
The new data essentially echoed a MAY 2016 EDISON RESEARCH study of the TSL of over 8,500 U.S. consumers 13+, which found 44% of all TSL to music was spent on the AM/FM radio format, followed by listening to purchased music participants had (including CDs and digital music files (18%) and music streaming (17%).
Devicewise, over 40% of music listening time was spent with traditional radio receivers, while 23% used mobile devices and 16% used desktop and laptop PCs.
The news comes as subscriptions to streaming music sites are dramatically growing globally. An INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE PHONOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY study in APRIL found that an estimated 68 million people were music service subscribers in 2015, up from 41 million in the year prior.
