Radio Program Distributors Settle on AMC-18/SES-11 As Replacement For AMC-8 Satellite

Major U.S. radio progamming distributors including LEARFIELD, ORBITAL MEDIA NETWORKS (OMNI), PREMIERE NETWORKS, SKYVIEW NETWORKS and WESTWOOD ONE have chosen the replacement for the radio satellite AMC-8, picking AMC-18 at 105 degrees West longitude, which will soon be replaced at the 105 position by the new SES-11.  SES-1 at 101 degrees West Longitude will serve as the backup.

Stations will have to repoint their receive dishes from SES-8's 139 West slot to the new position at 105 degrees West, and will have between FEBRUARY and JUNE 30, 2017 to do so, during which time the programming will be fed on both AMC-8 and AMC-18.  Stations are being advised that because of the new location being higher in the sky and due south of DENVER, transmissions are less likely to be blocked by buildings or trees to the southwest and sun outages in MARCH and OCTOBER will occur about 2-1/2 hours earlier than they do with AMC-8.
