It's been a sad and tragic year for deaths among some of music's royalty. BRITISH radio host STEVE PENK couldn't believe the volume of calls he received after the death of GEORGE MICHAEL on DECEMBER 25th.
"I was enjoying a family CHRISTMAS party when my phone suddenly went into absolute meltdown. I've never witnessed anything like it. Last time I saw a similar reaction was when PRINCE died back in APRIL, but nothing like on this scale."
PENK created the "RADIO DEAD" format earlier this year in the U.K. as a streaming station and app sporting a playlist featuring the music of dead rock stars. He is set to bring the concept to the U.S. both as a 24/7 format and a two-hour weekly show (NET NEWS 12/16).
The former CAPITAL FM and VIRGIN RADIO host and frequent on-air prankster recently conducted a TWITTER poll of RADIO DEAD listeners for the year's "Most Shocking Music Deaths," with MICHAEL leading the list of music superstars who have passed on this year:
1. GEORGE MICHAEL (12/25)
2. DAVID BOWIE (1/10)
3. PRINCE (4/21)
4. GLENN FREY (1/18)
5. RICK PARFITT, STATUS QUO (12/24)
6. BILLY PAUL (4/24)
7. LEONARD COHEN (11/7)
8. PETE BURNS (10/23)
9. GREG LAKE (12/7)
10. MAURICE WHITE (2/4)
