JERMAINE DUPRI, writer, producer and fiancé of JANET JACKSON, has stepped down from his position as head of urban music at VIRGIN RECORDS. Industry insiders claim the reason had to do with the disappointing sales of JANET’s latest album “20 Y.O.”
DURPI explained it this way. “Since there are so many rumors running rampant about my position at VIRGIN RECORDS, I feel that it is necessary to set the record straight. I was not forced out of the company. I made a decision that it was in my best interest to leave.”
DUPRI became head of urban music at VIRGIN just last year. He was an executive producer of “20 Y.O.” along with longtime JACKSON producers JIMMY JAM and TERRY LEWIS. JANET’s album failed to debut at the top of the charts last month and then steadily fell. To date it has sold under 500,000 copies since its SEPTEMBER 26 release.
