What does a wolf mascot have to do with the turnaround of CUMULUS MEDIA? Everything says CEO MARY BERNER, who explained a new sales-lead contest to staffers in a video posted to VIMEO. The wolf is named 'SULU," which BERNER explains is short for “SULUMUC,” or “CUMULUS turned around.”
The year-long "Be A Leader" contest will offer prizes to staffers helping turnaround revenues -- and those prizes are open to all staffers generating sales -- not just the sales staff. After the contest runs its course, BERNER says winners will be awarded:
- A opportunity to THE SUPER BOWL or THE GRAMMYS
- Nine runners-up get “unique experiences,” like being CEO for a day, a VIP trip to NASHVILLE or experiencing a “superstar event on a tropical island”
- All 10 winners will receive $1,000 cash
- The winning market for each quarter gets possession of the “SULU” mascot for bragging rights.
What brought this on? BERNER explained the company, “did underperform, versus other radio companies," and "while we came very close, we didn’t make our 2016 budget.” She wants everyone to know 2017 is “the year where the rubber meets the road in our turnaround. The year where we have to show our shareholders, our partners, our board, our competitors and ourselves what 6,000 focused, collaborative, responsible and empowered individuals can accomplish.”
