Condolences to family and friends of BOB DREW, former minor league baseball GM and radio broadcaster, who died MARCH 19th of esophageal cancer in SUN CITY CENTER, FL, a day before what would have been his 81st birthday, according to the ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE.
DREW, as radio broadcaster for the WINGS, called the longest game in professional baseball history, the 32-inning, over-8 hour game between the WINGS and PAWTUCKET RED SOX in 1981. He worked with the WICHITA AEROS, LAFAYETTE DRILLERS, and SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS before joining the RED WINGS in 1976. He was promoted to GM in 1979 and left shortly after the 32-inning game in a dispute with the team, although he called the conclusion of the game for the then-parent BALTIMORE ORIOLES radio network. After he left ROCHESTER, he served as GM of the MADISON MUSKIES through 1986. More recently, he owned golf shops in the ROCHESTER area before retiring to SUN CITY CENTER, FL, near TAMPA.
