The drama in the battle over ownership of Americana WNEX-F (THE CREEK 100.9 FM)/MACON, GA took a strange turn this weekend with the arrest of former owner LOWELL REGISTER on SUNDAY (3/26), charged with burglary for taking a chip from the motherboard from THE CREEK's transmitter and trying a second time to break into the station's transmitter building with a drill.
CBS affiliate WMAZ-TV/MACON reports that someone broke into the property at THE CREEK's tower on SATURDAY and took the chip, taking the station off the air until a replacement could be purchased and installed several hours later; the chip was later found in a plastic bag on the property. Deputies watching the property observed REGISTER and his son-in-law trying to break in on SUNDAY and arrested REGISTER; for his part, REGISTER, who lost ownership of three stations including THE CREEK to a receiver who sold the stations to BRAD EVANS, WES GRIFFIN, and ROB EVANS' CREEK MEDIA over his objection, claims that he still owns the tower property, while CREEK MEDIA says it owns the building and equipment outright and the property matter is presently the focus of a court dispute.
EVANS told WMAZ-TV that he would pursue federal charges against REGISTER.
