After weeks of speculation it is finally official, ENTERCOM has purchased Country WYGY/CINCINNATI from CUMULUS. ENTERCOM only purchased the call letters and the intellectual property, meaning the staff and physical assets were not part of the deal. The deal was a swap for ENTERCOM's Oldies WGRR and follows CUMULUS' SEPTEMBER 21 move of WYGY from its longtime 96.5 FM frequency to 94.9, and gives ENTERCOM two Country stations in the market (it acquired WUBE [B-105] from CBS in its recent multi-market purchase and took it over in a time brokerage deal this week pending closing).
PD KEVIN KING tells ALL ACCESS that the KEN and KITTY morning show and middayer JESSE TACK were picked up by ENTERCOM and will remain on the air. KING will stay with CUMULUS, helping with the transitions and will then most likely be re-assigned to a new station. He can be reached at kevin.king@cumulus.com and (704) 607-2111. MD/night mama DAWN MICHAELS is actively looking for her next opportunity. Her email, dawn.michaels@cumulus.com, is still active for the time being, and she can also be reached at (513) 884-9724. Afternoon host CHRIS CLARE is also on the prowl for a new gig, so contact him at (859) 241-0417, (859) 866-2765 and chrisclare@prodigy.net.
As for the new WYGY, it seems that it will move frequencies and undergo a makeover. The BUSINESS COURIER in CINCY reports that ENTERCOM will move the station to the 97.3 frequency, formerly the home of ENTERCOM's newly acquired Alternative WAQZ. WYGY will be known as "THE WOLF...TODAY'S NEW COUNTRY" and will project a more "in-your-face" attitude in its music and positioning. To read the rest of the article just click here.
At the same time, as ALL ACCESS tipped last week, CUMULUS will debut a new Talk format on the 96.5 FM frequency. The new format, launching THURSDAY, will take CUMULUS' "SUPERTALK" slogan and will sport a lineup that includes the previously announced MANCOW for mornings; PREMIERE's GLENN BECK, 10a-noon; WESTWOOD ONE's BILL O'REILLY, noon-2p; SPORTING NEWS RADIO, 3-4p; sister WWTN (SUPERTALK 99.7 WTN)/NASHVILLE afternoon host PHIL VALENTINE, 4-7p; SPORTING NEWS RADIO, 7-9p; and TALK RADIO NETWORK's RUSTY HUMPHRIES, 9p-midnight.
