Nevada Public Radio Launches Triple A KVNV (NV89)/Reno

NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO’s (NVPR) music discovery channel is now broadcasting live on KVNV (NV89)/RENO, NV. The public radio station will champion emerging artists and NEVADA musicians, as well as established artists from recent years. Earlier this year, NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO purchased what was then-noncommercial Variety KJIV (THE FINE 89)/SUN VALLEY-RENO, NV for $550,000 from OPEN SKY RADIO CORP. (NET NEWS, 2/17).

RENO on-air mainstay WILLOBEE CARLAN is named NVPR as NV89’s OM/PD.  Prior to joining NV89, CARLAN was the Dir./Broadcast Operations for SHAMROCK COMMUNICATIONS in RENO. CARLAN’s 30-year radio resume includes major-label recording artist management along with on-air and managerial roles in NEW YORK, AUSTIN, SANTA BARBARA and PHOENIX.

“We’re thrilled to be expanding into RENO, said FLORENCE ROGERS, Pres./CEO of NVPR. “NV89 will complement the current public media offerings available and be a catalyst for new content and partnerships.”

“We incorporated as NEVADA PUBLIC RADIO in 1975 although we’re primarily associated with LAS VEGAS," ROGERS added. "Acquiring a license that would have been lost to the public radio system was something we had to take a look at, but the opportunity to create a new music format distributed statewide speaks to our mission of supporting the cultural life of the communities we serve.” 

“RENO is already an incredible place to call home and now we have a true home for local and emerging artists,” said CARLAN. “In knowing and assessing the local radio landscape, NV89 beautifully fills a void in our community. The journey ahead is shaping up to be fulfilling and promising.”

Working with consultant MIKE HENRY, CARLAN has brought together a team of on-air talent that includes KROQ/LOS ANGELES alum GIA DESANTIS, former tour/stage manager and Life is Beautiful music coordinator JAKE WAGNER, former FOX 11 host and KTHX midday personality MALAYNA KERTON and STEVE MASTERS from MTV and KITS (LIVE 105)/SAN FRANCISCO.

NV89 airs NPR’s WORLD CAFE and will be exclusively affiliated with the VUHAUS video platform. Along with music, NVPR’s news magazine “State of Nevada” will air weekdays at 9a.  In addition to its RENO frequency, NV89 is streaming at NV89.org and on KNPR HD3 through their network of repeater stations in NEVADA, UTAH, ARIZONA and CALIFORNIA.
