E.W. Scripps Reports Radio Revenues Off For First Quarter

THE E.W. SCRIPPS COMPANY has reported operating results for the first quarter of 2017. For the quarter, net loss was $1.9 million or 2 cents per share. In the prior-year quarter, the net income was $4.9 million or 6 cents per share. For the quarter, total revenue was $211 million compared to $209 million in first-quarter 2016.
Radio
Radio revenue was $14 million, down from $14.6 million in the 2016 quarter. Expenses were $12.4 million compared to $12.5 million in 2016. Segment profit in the radio division was $1.6 million in the first quarter, down from $2.1 million in the 2016 quarter.
Digital
Digital revenue was $15.4 million, up 24.6% from the prior period. Excluding the impact of CRACKED, which was acquired in the second quarter of 2016, total revenue increased 16%. Expenses for the digital group were $21.5 million, an increase of $6.1 million from the prior-year period. Excluding the impact of CRACKED, expenses increased about 25%. Reported segment loss in the digital division was $6.2 million in the first quarter, compared to $3.1 million in the 2016 quarter.
