Is MIKE FRANCESA's next move after his contract expires at CBS RADIO Sports WFAN-A-F/NEW YORK in DECEMBER podcasting? In an interview with BRYAN CURTIS at BILL SIMMONS' THE RINGER, FRANCESA, who has been coy about his plans for after his present contract expires, denies a NEW YORK DAILY NEWS report that he is merely using the threat of leaving WFAN as a contract negotiation ploy ("ridiculous") and dismisses podcasts, to which he says he has never listened and jokes that "they’re handing out podcasts like they’re Pez, OK?," but intimates that he "know(s) how to fix" the problem with podcasting and might "possibly" do one himself.
Praising SIMMONS, GLENN BECK, and ADAM CAROLLA as examples of digital media empires he studies, FRANCESA adds that "you have to be a brand" to succeed in podcasting, and "I will do that. … I’m going to do well in that business as soon as I walk into it because I’m a brand.” As for monetizing a podcast, FRANCESA said, without disclosing his plan, “I think I have an idea, I really do. I’ve given it a lot of thought.”
