Van Amburg, Bay Area TV News Anchor And Former Radio Talk Host, Dies At 86

Condolences to family and friends of VAN AMBURG, the longtime ABC O&O KGO-TV/SAN FRANCISCO news anchor/reporter who also hosted at radio stations in the BAY AREA, who passed away JUNE 22nd at 86 in EL CERRITO, CA.
AMBURG (full name FRED VAN AMBURG) started in TV news in the market at the 1956 Republican National Convention, becoming Sports Director at CBS affiliate KPIX-TV in 1960 and then hosting talk shows at KFRC-A and KNEW-A, where he also served as analyst on OAKLAND RAIDERS broadcasts with BILL KING. He joined KGO-TV in 1969 and left in 1986 due to conflicts with station management.
"KGO-TV is saddened to learn that a legendary member of the ABC7 News team -- VAN AMBURG -- passed away last week," read a statement from KGO-TV issued FRIDAY (6/30). "VAN AMBURG was a local television icon and a respected journalist who BAY AREA viewers trusted for decades. We extend our sympathy to his family during this difficult time."
