PODTRAC's JUNE 2017 ranking of podcast publishers adds two networks -- ESPN, in at number 5, and WONDERY, in at 7th -- displacing THE WASHINGTON POST and WBUR/BOSTON, with the caveat that the rankings only show networks opting in for PODTRAC's Podcast Measurement System.
Total Global Unique Streams and Downloads for the top 10 were up 13% from MAY to JUNE, and up 57% from JUNE 2016, although the makeup of the top 10 was different in each case. It should also be noted that each network has a wildly different number of shows; THIS AMERICAN LIFE/SERIAL has just three active shows yet is third behind NPR (with 39 shows) and WNYC STUDIOS (with 42); CBS and the NEW YORK TIMES have similar total numbers but CBS is said to have 417 active shows and the TIMES has 9, while ESPN's 94 shows still trail HOWSTUFFWORKS' 14 and TAL/SERIAL's 3.
The rankings, which, again, only include shows opting in for PODTRAC's Podcast Measurement System (and missing some of the largest shows and publishers) and ranked by unique U.S. monthly audience:
- NPR (last month: 1)
- WNYC STUDIOS (3)
- THIS AMERICAN LIFE/SERIAL (2)
- HOWSTUFFWORKS (4)
- ESPN (--)
- RADIOTOPIA (5)
- WONDERY (--)
- THE NEW YORK TIMES (6)
- CBS (7)
- AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA (8)
