The RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION (RTDNA) is among the signatories joining the SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS (SPJ) asking the Senate Commerce Committee to hold a hearing on the state of media in the U.S.
In a letter to Committee Chairman JOHN THUNE (R-SD) and Ranking Member BILL NELSON (D-FL), the organizations, promoted by a similar request by Sens. MAGGIE HASSAN and TOM UDALL, said, "We believe now is the time to reaffirm the importance of a free and unfettered press, which has been a cornerstone of democracy for the past 240 years. Having an open discussion where journalists can talk about their professions, the industry and explain how it all works will hopefully help rebuild trust in a pillar of our democracy, reaffirming to the American people the link between the strength of our nation’s democracy and its free press."
The other signatories to the letter include the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF BUSINESS PUBLICATION EDITORS, ASSOCIATED COLLEGIATE PRESS, ASSOCIATION FOR EDUCATION IN JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION, COLLEGE MEDIA ASSOCIATION, COLORADO PRESS WOMEN, COMMITTEE TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS, EDUCATION WRITERS ASSOCIATION, GOVERNMENT INFORMATION WATCH, INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF WEEKLY NEWSPAPER EDITORS, JOURNALISM EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC JOURNALISTS, NATIONAL FEDERATION OF PRESS WOMEN, NATIONAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION, NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION, SOCIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISTS, and the TULLY CENTER FOR FREE SPEECH.
