After the RIAA issued its rejoinder to YOUTUBE Global Head Of Music LYOR COHEN (NET NEWS 8/21), showing how both APPLE MUSIC and SPOTIFY pay more than the GOOGLE-owned streamer, further research confirmed those results, according to a report in DIGITAL MUSIC NEWS.
In refuting COHEN's insistence that the platform pays out $3 per 1,000 streams, the RIAA estimates that per 1,000 streams APPLE MUSIC pays "slightly over" $12, SPOTIFY "about" $7.50, and YOUTUBE "around" $1.50. The RIAA got their information from NIELSEN, BUZZANGLE, and MIDIA.
DIGITAL MUSIC NEWS released its own figures six months ago comparing eight major streaming platforms, with YOUTUBE ranking the lowest on the list with just $0.0006 per play. For an artist to earn the monthly minimum wage amount on the platform ($1,472), they would need 2.4 million plays. That information came from the team at INFORMATION IS BEAUTIFUL (IiB).
Unlike the RIAA, the team at IIB didn’t compile their information from the usual sources, but from the artists themselves and a range of other sources. According to them, for 1,000 plays for an unsigned artist on APPLE MUSIC, expect to receive $6.40, SPOTIFY $3.80 and YOUTUBE 60 cents.
For artists signed to major labels, the payouts are slightly increased to: APPLE MUSIC: $7.30, SPOTIFY: $4.40 and YOUTUBE: 70 cents.
