An article in TODAY's NEW YORK DAILY NEWS by media writer DAVID HINKLEY discusses the recent on-air changes at CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW (LITE 106.7)/NEW YORK with OM/PD & VP/AC JIM RYAN.
RYAN says money was not the reason behind the changes. "The changes we made were 100% based on improving the product." The article goes on to say RYAN "resents" speculation that WLTW was following other stations in trimming costs by replacing well-paid veterans.
Said RYAN, "I love BILL BUCHNER. He's a great guy. But we needed to do better in the morning. Our overall morning numbers were good, but a lot of that didn't start until 8, when people got to work. We needed to improve from 5 to 8, and that's what we hired CHRISTINE [NAGY] and KAREN [CARSON] to do. We think they can create a different kind of show, a show more people will listen to."
He added that there was early discussion of WHOOPI GOLDBERG's show being placed on WLTW, but when it was slotted instead on WKTU, the NAGY/CARSON plan started to take shape.
Interestingly, RYAN also told THE DAILY NEWS that it's "a possibility" that syndicated host DELILAH will fill JJ KENNEDY's evening slot -- but that if she does, "It would be a custom show done entirely for NEW YORK. I would program the music."
