KENDRICK LAMAR was the big winner at last night's 2017 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS (NET NEWS 8/27), the 34th edition of the show, this year held at the FABULOUS FORUM in LOS ANGELES, hosted by KATY PERRY.
LAMAR got the show started with an epic, fire-laden performance of "DNA" and "HUMBLE," the latter earning him a total of six, newly named gender-correct MOON PERSONS, including Best Video Of The Year and Best Hip-Hop Video (it also earned four nods in technical categories).
ED SHEERAN, who followed LAMAR to the stage with a version of "Shape Of You," then a surprise duet with LIL UZI VERT on Song Of The Summer "Xo Tour Llif3," received the evening's other big award, Artist Of The Year.
Other highlights included performances by SHAWN MENDES and FIFTH HARMONY, the latter fake-tossing a fifth member off the stage, notably shading their ex-mate CAMILA CABELLO.
It was left to PARIS JACKSON to make a political statement, condemning the hate at CHARLOTTESVILLE, while later in the show, SUSAN BRO, the mother of HEATHER HEYER, the woman run over by a car at the protest, appeared on-stage to announce a fund she was starting in memory of her daughter.
TAYLOR SWIFT's new video for "Look What You Made Me Do," premiered while JARED LETO paid tribute to CHRIS CORNELL and CHESTER BENNINGTON. Notable collaborations included LOGIC with ALESSIA CARA and KHALID, THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS with TRAVIS SCOTT, ROD STEWART with DNCE and KATY PERRY with NICKI MINAJ
