On the heels of Hurricane HARVEY's devastation last WEEK in TEXAS, and, just when you thought things couldn't get worse, here comes HURRICANE IRMA, rapidly gaining size and speed in the ATLANTIC ocean. The NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER YESTERDAY (9/5) upgraded IRMA to a Category 5 storm, with sustained winds of 185 MPH, making it potentially, one of the most powerful ATLANTIC storms ever recorded. FLORIDA Governor RICK SCOTT has declared a statewide state of emergency, ahead of IRMA's wrath.
Radio is prepping too, with CBS RADIO Country WKIS/MIAMI, and Top 40 sister WPOW OM ROB MORRIS telling ALL ACCESS, "We are giving out weather preparedness info to listeners now - "Be prepared, not scared." Now is the time to plan, as the storm tracks towards up. Schools are being canceled as of THURSDAY (97) and FRIDAY (9/8). Evacuation plans are being set up. We will be on air with info and music on WKIS and WPOW as long as possible, until we go to 'wall-to-wall' coverage from our TV sister station, WFOR-TV."
Meanwhile, ALPHA Country WIRK/WEST PALM BEACH, FL PD SAMMY CRUISE tells ALL ACCESS, "We are in the cone of uncertainty still, but don’t know the exact path. It’s frustrating because once we do know the path, it’s going to be so close to FLORIDA, that it might be too late for some to get out. Our plan is to increase the hurricane updates as it gets closer. We update at 8am, 11am, 2pm and 5pm. The 8am and 5pm are the crucial ones. Those updates are where we see if the path models have changed. If we are in the direct hit path, we will go wall to wall with our news partner CBS 12."
ALL ACCESS will keep you posted on IRMA coverage from local radio; if you're in her path and have plans for the storm, let us know here.
