The Seventh annual NEXT RADIO 2017 CONFERENCE took place on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18th at THE ROYAL INSTITUTION MAYFAIR LONDON (UNITED KINGDOM), organized by JAMES CRIDLAND and MATT DEEGAN.
SJORS FOHRLICH Chief Editor of BNR NIEUWSRADIO (NL) talked about what makes great radio, “Innovation is important to us.” VOIZZUP is the system they use to measure audience engagement. With Podcasting, we have made very good deals with iTUNES and SPOTIFY to share our content on their platforms “I think it’s the best to be everywhere your listener is.”
FOHRLICH spoke about the new BNR SMART RADIO, a new feature that allows listeners to tailor a playlist of the station’s content relevant and of interest to them personally into a DIGITAL playlist.
When data leads to better radio the important point to remember is: Innovation is key – however content is still King SAM WALKER BBC (UK) spoke about effective ways of connecting with the listener as a presenter on her shows for BBC RADIO 5 LIVE and BBC RADIO MANCHESTER in her talk about what radio can learn from horror movies. Using emotion and feeling to connect with the listener. Put your listeners in the middle of the story make them walk down the cellar steps. Tell your listener how you want them to feel at the start of the story.
- JAMES CRIDLAND RADIO FUTUROLOGIST (UK) in his presentation said, “Your future is both on-demand and live. Get your radio station onto loudspeakers. Get your content into headphones.”
- EMILY TURNBULL (NZ) took the audience around the world in 18 minutes by sharing some of the best radio she’s seen working in several continents and markets.
- NAILS MAHONEY (IRL) took an honest look at radio’s past and present through his work worldwide as an on-air coach.
- JOE D’ANGELO DRS (USA) spoke about the evolution of broadcast Radio – the Global Challenge
- GLOBAL (UK)’s STEVE WILSON-BEALES took us through the process going into producing social media video that highlights radio content for over 40 Million users annually.
- RADIOPLAYER (UK)’s MICHAEL HILL explained the vast differences between platforms like TUNEIN and the UK developed RADIOPLAYER which gives back control to stations using the system.
- RADIO 1 VINTAGE (BBC, UK) SAM BAILEY and JOE HARLAND (BBC) spoke About the BBC celebrating the station they loved for 50 years celebrating its launch on Sept. 30th, 1967 with 50 Shows in 50 Hours reflecting 50 years on RADIO 1 VINTAGE which will kick off on Saturday 30 September 2017 at 8.30am (UK Time), 50 years to the day since Radio 1 launched.
- BAILEY and HARLAND Played rare vintage clips of RADIO 1 over the years featuring stars like ELTON JOHN, ABBA, and RADIO 1 DJ’s KENNY EVERETT, TONY BLACKBURN, TOMMY VANCE and JOHN PEEL.
- Final Speaker at NEXT RADIO 2017 was BBC RADIO 1 (UK) evening host ANNIE MAC (IRL) who spoke about her career and the road that led her to a top evening job at The BBC.
