Still recovering from last night's spectacular opening, the iHEARTRADIO MUSIC FESTIVAL unveiled its LAS VEGAS DAYTIME VILLAGE concert across the street from the LUXOR HOTEL and CASINO this afternoon with performances by MIGOS, HALSEY and NIALL HORAN. The event is being live-streamed for the first time ever at www.cwtv.com.
ATLANTA-based hip-hop group MIGOS lived up to the hype -- QUAVO, TAKEOFF and OFFSET sauntered onstage to the Uzi shots of "Got Right Wicha," before digging into "Slippery," their duet with GUCCI MANE, and its dance-hall toasting. The intricate "Deadz" is next, its "You n****s in trouble" refreain leading to the ominous, threatening, gloriously profane "Hannah Montana," an inadvertent reference to one of tonight's headliners. The post-trap clip-clop rhythms of "T-Shirt" mask a song, according to QUAVO, which "expresses love for your mama," while "Bad and Bougee" engages the crowd to fill in the spaces before a brief snippet of "Handsome & Wealthy." With a mesmerizing intensity and wordplay worthy of a SHAKESPEAREAN comedy, MIGOS' slyly subversive set was a tribute to mainstream iHEARTRADIO's courage in representing the wide range of today's music in this two-day fest.
The diminutive, dressed-in-black HALSEY also dominated the stage with a techno-rock performance of stunning confidence, starting with "Strangers," into the seductive "Now Or Never" and the evocative "Colors" ("And now I'm tearing through the pages and the ink"), before skipping to "my part" in THE CHAINSMOKERS' smash, "Closer." "We ain't ever getting older," she sang, not believing it for a second. "This song is about looking back on all your failed relationships, and realizing that you might have been the problem," she said, by way of introducing."Bad At Love," before belting it out like the pop diva she's become.
Perhaps the afternoon's most anticipated performance was from NIALL HORAN, yet another successful ONE DIRECTION alum who previewed his appearance on the main stage later that evening, starting with "This Town," the new single, "Too Much To Ask," the blue-eyed HALL AND OATES pop-soul of "On The Loose" and a victory lap for the funky, rhythmic R&B of "Slow Hands," which it was announced had just vaulted to #1 song "in the country" that week.
The afternoon got underway with highly touted L.A. newcomers HEY VIOLET, whose impressive opening set included their single, "Hoodie," and hit songwriter JULIA MICHAELS singing/whispering the chorus to "Pink" as well as "Used To Love You," the song she wrote for GWEN STEFANI and her own hit single, "Issues," prompting the afternoon's first singalong.
NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN music-turned-alt-AMERICANA-rockers JUDAH & THE LION showed some real promise with shaggy-haired blonde, striped pants-wearing lead singer JUDAH AKERS' spirited performance of "Suit and Jacket," their Top 5 Alternative/Top 40 Rock hit, the mandolin-inflected "Rich Kids" and the #1 Alternative smash "Take It All Back." After performing with DAVID GUETTA last night, BEBE REXHA returned with a set which featured "Take Me Home," her collaboration with CASH CASH and "Me, Myself & I,," her duet with G-EAZY, before she brought out ONE DIRECTION's LOUIS TOMLINSON for "Back To You," finishing with "I Got You." FRENCH MONTANA rapped through a rapid-fire delivered set featuring "What They Talking About," "Ocho Cinco", "All The Way Up," which he originally performed with FAT JOE and REMY MA,, ."No Shopping," his duet with DRAKE, "Ain't Worried About Nothin," "Pop That" and his big hit, "Unforgettable," the crowd chanting the title refrain.
Other highlights included rising superstar KHALID's self-prophesizing "Start Of Something Great," the percolating "Let's Go," the pleading, bass-heavy "Another Sad Love Song," the autobiographical "8TEEN" and his signature song, "Young Dumb & Broke," all accompanied by pom-pom-waving cheerleaders ; KELSEA BALLERINI's winsome take on "Yeah Boy" and her current single, "Legends." and dance-popsters CHEAT CODES' version of "No Promises," their collaboration with DEMI LOVATO. U.K. girl group LITTLE MIX, even down one member with PERRIE EDWARDS under the weather, still impressed as a trio in a set that included hits "Wings" and "Touch." BLEACHERS' JACK ANTONOFF took center stage for the elegaic "I Miss Those Days," from their recent album, "Gone Now," transitioning into a stylistic nod to fellow JERSEYite SPRINGSTEEN with the pairing of "Rollercoaster" and the Alternative chart-topper "I Wanna Get Better," followed by the band's top three Alternative single, "Don't Take The Money."
MILEY's younger sister NOAH CYRUS, EDM stalwarts FLUME and rockers ALL TIME LOW also performed during the afternoon.
