Fifty-eight are now confirmed dead, and over 500 were injured, when a gunman opened fire from a LAS VEGAS hotel on a huge concert festival outside. Last night (10/1), shots were fired in to the crowd at the ROUTE 91 HARVEST FESTIVAL as Country artist JASON ALDEAN performed. SWAT units found the shooter on the 32nd floor at the MANDALAY BAY HOTEL, identified as 64 year old NEVADA resident STEVEN PADDOCK; reports have PADDOCK having killed himself.
THE NEW YORK TIMES reports, "The shooting happened near the MANDALAY BAY RESORT AND CASINO. Video posted online showed the Country singer JASON ALDEAN performing outside the hotel at ROUTE 91 HARVEST, a Country music festival, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. 'Get down,' one shouted. 'Stay down,' screamed another." The LAS VEGAS Police report SWAT teams were sent to the hotel immediately after the first reports of the shooting at 10:08p (PT).
JASON ALDEAN took to his INSTAGRAM account after the incident.
BEASLEY MEDIA GROUP VP/Corporate Communications HEIDI RAPHAEL tells ALL ACCESS, "Several of our people were on site when the shooting took place. Everyone is safe. BEASLEY MEDIA GROUP’s LAS VEGAS stations have been on the air providing timely information to listeners. JOHN SHAFFER (News Director at News/Talk 720 KDWN) and the [Country] KCYE team have been doing on-going updates as well as encouraging people to donate blood through UNITED BLOOD SERVICE. In addition, there is a 'family' update/info phone number (1-866-535-5654) and a [FACEBOOK] page for people to check-in entitled: The Violent Incident In LAS VEGAS, where individuals can check in as 'safe' and others can check to see if family and friends are safe."
RAPHAEL also noted, "We suspended our National Cash Contest today across the entire company. Instead, we will donate the money that we had planned to giveaway to an official victim’s fund."
BEASLEY Country KCYE morning guy MIKE WEST was there and had to escape. He shared a video on the station's website.
ALL ACCESS got in contact with CBS/LAS VEGAS OM J.B. KING for an update on how they are handling this tragedy. "The fear is over, and now it's the disbelief and tragedy of it all and how it's affecting our community and listeners," KING said. "When the reports began coming in late last night, we all swung into action with our Talk outlet KXNT-A leading the way with coverage... and our morning teams began assembling around midnight to see what they could do. KXNT-A is wall to wall coverage, while our music stations, KLUC, KMXB, KXQQ, KXTE, and Sports KXST are focused on speaking with listeners as well as first responders and passing along vital information from the authorities and playing very little music. One of the most pressing issues and needs is that with so many wounded, UNITED BLOOD SERVICES is in desperate need of blood donations. We are all working around the clock to answer the questions of the community and help however we can."
