AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA is getting a $1.5 million grant from the CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING for a new investigative journalism initiative at SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC BROADCASTING News-Talk KPCC/PASADENA-LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO News-Talk WNYC-A-F/NEW YORK, UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY/KANSAS CITY PUBLIC MEDIA News-Talk-Classical KCUR/KANSAS CITY, and ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS News-Talk-Classical WABE/ATLANTA.
The program will find the APM REPORTS investigative and documentary group working with the four stations on several investigative stories over the next two years, with the goal of filling the reporting gaps left as local newspapers have cut back on editorial staffing. APM REPORTS Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief CHRIS WORTHINGTON will be Editor-in-Chief of the project.
“A healthy democracy needs investigative journalism,” said WORTHINGTON. “Without it, the powerful go unchecked and the voiceless have no voice. The initiative strengthens public media’s role in the Fourth Estate at a time when trusted, fact-based news is more important than ever.”
“CPB funds journalism to help ensure that the American public has access to high-quality reporting, as our legislated mission recognizes that educated and informed citizens are the basis of our civil society,” said CPB SVP/Journalism and Radio KATHY MERRITT. “We are making investments to build the capacity of public media to produce all kinds of journalism, including analysis and accountability journalism, on the local, regional, and national level.”
