CBS RADIO Sports WFAN-A-F/NEW YORK made its formal announcement of its post-MIKE FRANCESA and post-CRAIG CARTON plans this morning on BOOMER ESIASON's show, introducing the new CHRIS CARLIN, BART SCOTT, and MAGGIE GRAY afternoon show (NET NEWS 11/14) with a visit by the new hosts to ESIASON's show, and naming CBS SPORTS RADIO "GIO AND JONES" host GREGG GIANNOTTI as ESIASON's new co-host.
In addition, the midday JOE BENIGNO and EVAN ROBERTS show will add an hour, running 10-2p (ET), with CARLIN, SCOTT, and GRAY handling 2-6:30p. The changes officially take place JANUARY 2nd.
Several outlets reported TUESDAY (11/14) that sister WIP/PHILADELPHIA afternoon co-host CARLIN (who confirmed his move to WFAN on his WIP show), former NEW YORK JETS player SCOTT, and CBS SPORTS RADIO and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SI.NOW host GRAY would replace MIKE FRANCESA in afternoons when he leaves the station on DECEMBER 15th, and the visit by the new hosts to the station made the move official.
Carlin, Scott, Gray CARLIN told ESIASON that even though he had just moved to PHILADELPHIA to host WIP's afternoon, "it took like 10 seconds" to accept the WFAN offer when he got the call. GRAY called her hiring "shocking, out of the blue... I couldn't be more happy."
GIANNOTTI, also visiting ESIASON's show, joked that he is pleased
Giannotti that he's "not the fattest new host on WFAN," a crack about CARLIN's size. He also said that he had received support from CARTON in a phone call after getting the job; ESIASON repeated his support for his former partner, asserting that CARTON, who was fired after his arrest on charges he led a Ponzi scheme, "will be back" on radio at some point.
In the official release, SVP/Market Manager MARC RAYFIELD said, “Today’s announcement helps solidify WFAN’s rank as the #1 sports talk radio station in the U.S. for years to come. The mix of distinctive new voices and line-up changes alongside perennial on-air favorites ensures a continuously remarkable listening experience for the passionate NEW YORK sports fans we proudly serve.”
VP of Programming MARK CHERNOFF added, “With the addition of GREGG to the WFAN morning show alongside BOOMER, and with CHRIS, BART and MAGGIE joining us in the afternoon, we’ve assembled a stellar line-up that we’re proud to showcase on WFAN. NEW YORK sports fans are about to be entertained, challenged and engaged like never before.”
