BELL MEDIA has instituted layoffs at its TV and radio properties across CANADA, but the company has not disclosed who or how many employees were laid off, reports the CBC.
UNIFOR, the union representing BELL MEDIA's employees at CTV, estimated that 50 jobs were cut on the television side, including both sports anchors at CFTO-TV (CTV TORONTO)/TORONTO, but radio layoffs have not been confirmed; the company operates 105 radio stations and licenses the iHEARTRADIO platform for CANADA along with CTV, CTV2, TSN/RDS, the MUCH/MTV cable networks, the DISCOVERY CHANNEL networks, HBO CANADA, and several more TV properties.
BELL MEDIA Spokesman MATTHEW GARROW told the CBC, "Like other Canadian broadcasters, we are confronting rapid change in the media marketplace including new broadcast technologies and viewing options and fast-growing international competition. As the media marketplace evolves, local radio and TV stations are facing significant declines in advertising, their only source of revenue. We need to reorganize and reduce costs to manage the impact."
