After being placed on leave due to accusations of sexual harassment by at least three journalists, NPR Chief News Editor DAVID SWEENEY has left the company.
NPR's DAVID FOLKENFLIK reports that a memo to the staff from Acting SVP/News CHRIS TURPIN announced SWEENEY's departure. TURPIN's memo said that Senior Manager EDITH CHAPIN would take over as Executive Editor, encompassing SWEENEY's duties.
SWEENEY had been accused of kissing a former NPR producer without her consent in 2002, while an NPR journalist reported that he had tried to kiss her while they were out for drinks discussing her career in 2007; NPR Editor LAUREN HODGES said that SWEENEY, then her supervisor, had directed "unwanted attention and unsolicited gifts" towards her.
