RUSSIA has retaliated for the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE's move to require RT AMERICA to register as a foreign agent by designating the VOICE OF AMERICA and RADIO FREE EUROPE/RADIO LIBERTY as foreign agents, which could lead to the VOA and RFE/RL losing access to the Duma, one of RUSSIA's houses of Parliament, as well as being blocked online. Also covered by RUSSIA's action are several RFE/RL stations reaching areas of RUSSIA and the CURRENT TIME TV video operation run by RFE/RL and RL's FACTOGRAPH website.
The DOJ required RT parent T&R PRODUCTIONS to register as a foreign agent in NOVEMBER, pointing to its control by Russian government interests. The Congressional Radio and TV Correspondents' Gallery rescinded RT's credentials to cover Congress last week, raising the possibility that the VOA and RFE/RL will be barred from covering the Duma as a response, with a vote on that proposal scheduled for WEDNESDAY. The other house of Russian Parliament, the Federation Council, has not thus far indicated how the registration will affect the American entities' access to its activities.
