The latest missive from PARAGON MEDIA STRATEGIES' MIKE HENRY contains warnings about radio's strategies for smart speakers.
HENRY's post at the PARAGON website notes that radio is in a rush to engage with devices like AMAZON's Echo and GOOGLE Home (likening the boom to the rush to invest in Bitcoin), but that while the devices present opportunity as a new distribution outlet, the demographics are younger than radio's profile and SOUND EXCHANGE royalty rates might make streaming through the devices expensive and monetization "elusive," as will the absence (on most devices) of display screens and pop-up players for advertising availabilities. Finally, HENRY offers advice on how to approach the devices, from training listeners on how to access stations to promotions involving the devices.
