House Democrats have voted NEW YORK Rep. JERROLD NADLER as their next leader on the Judiciary Committee. NADLER defeated Rep. ZOE LOFGREN (D-CA).
“This is a pivotal time, with our country possibly on the verge of a constitutional crisis,” NADLER said before the vote. “We cannot afford to make this choice based on anything but who is the best person to sit in that chair.”
NAB Pres./CEO GORDON SMITH REACTED, "NAB congratulates Rep. NADLER on his election as ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Having worked with Rep. NADLER on many issues over many years, we've always respected his intellect, commitment to public service and appreciation for the role of local broadcasting. We look forward to working with him and his staff in the coming months and years."
MUSICFIRST Exec. Dir. CHRIS ISRAEL noted, "The MUSICFIRST COALITION congratulates Congressman JERRY NADLER on being elected as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee and we look forward to continuing to work with him in this new leadership role. Congressman NADLER has been a consistent and passionate champion of music creators. From playing a leading role as a sponsor of the Fair Play Fair Pay Act to working on behalf of AMERICAN artists who have not been compensated fairly for work recorded before 1972, Congressman NADLER has been a steadfast supporter of music creators, working tirelessly on their behalf to make common-sense, bipartisan improvements to our nation’s outdated copyright laws."
The CONTENT CREATORS COALITION (c3) released the following statement congratulating NADLER’s election, “We are happy to congratulate Rep. JERRY NADLER on his election to lead the U.S. House Judiciary Democrats. Over his entire career, Rep. NADLER has been a champion for artists. Time and time again, he has taken on some of the most powerful special interests in WASHINGTON as he has fought to ensure working artists are paid fairly. Now, as Congress gets ready to reshape the rules for music streaming, we look forward to helping Ranking Member NADLER pass critical reforms including his Fair Play Fair Pay Act to make Big Radio pay for the music they earn billions of dollars from, the CLASSICS Act to stop some digital music services like SIRIUSXM from ripping off older artists, updates to the DMCA, and craft other reforms to protect artists’ rights in the digital age."
