FERAL AUDIO, one of the earliest comedy podcast networks, is folding at the beginning of 2018, reports NICK QUAH at NEW YORK MAGAZINE's VULTURE.
The closure is coming in the wake of emotional abuse allegations against founder DUSTIN MARSHALL by ex-girlfriend ABBY WEEMS in a tweet last THURSDAY (12/21). MARSHALL responded in a Tumblr post admitting to his behavior and saying he would be addressing his addiction issues. QUAH quotes an earlier version of the post that said MARSHALL would be "wrapping production" on the network while getting mental-health treatment and adding, "To FERAL AUDIO artists, after six years, I can no longer have the pressure of running a company, continue this lifestyle and be mentally healthy." The version of the post cited by QUAH also includes criticism of "the industry" taking over podcasting, advising producers to "please be independent, be strong and say no to these networks not made up of your friends," and adding, "since FERAL AUDIO is forever married to my name, i am dissolving it so no dark cloud should ever be above your work."
As for FERAL's shows, DAN HARMON's STARBURNS INDUSTRIES has announced the formation of SBI:AUDIO, a podcast network which will absorb HARMON's own "HARMONTOWN" as well as "DUMB PEOPLE TOWN" and "DUNCAN TRUSSELL'S FAMILY HOUR." "MY FAVORITE MURDER" earlier this year moved to MIDROLL MEDIA for distribution.
