YALE UNIVERSITY's online student radio station WYBCx has temporarily shut down after discovering that it needs licenses to play music, reports the YALE DAILY NEWS. The station has apparently been playing music online without licensing agreements for the past 10 years.
In an email to staff FRIDAY (2/16), GM EMMA KEYES wrote, “we do not have a licensing agreement for any of the music we have been playing which is NOT GOOD.... Seriously, we have been operating illegally since 2008." In a subsequent email, she said that the stream would remain offline until licensing deals are in place, saying that “The stream will hopefully be back up and running within the next week.”
WYBCx was created by YALE BROADCASTING CO. to offer a student-run station, since YALE's FM signal WYBC is operated commercially by professionals (today, in an Urban AC format managed by CONNOISSEUR MEDIA).
