Every year, COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR (CRS) awards three RUSTY WALKER SCHOLARSHIPS, offering airfare, full CRS registration, and hotel for industry pros who have never attended CRS before. Recipients for 2018 were: ALPHA MEDIA KUPL (98.7 THE BULL)/PORTLAND morning personality JENN HAYS; BUNYARD KCYT/FAYETTEVILLE, AR PD MARK "HAYSTACK" WELLS; and EMPIRE BROADCASTING KRTY/SAN JOSE, CA Dir./Promotions JAMIE JACKSON. ALL ACCESS NASHVILLE Editor RJ CURTIS followed up with all three this week and shares feedback from their first-ever CRS experience in his "I'M HERE ALL WEEK, TRY THE 'VILLE" column.
"I’ve found people who can be lifelong mentors and cheerleaders," said HAYS. "It’s incredibly encouraging to meet those people in the positions that – someday down the road – you would like to be in." WELLS cited ENTERCOM Country Format Captain and KWJJ/PORTLAND PD MIKE MOORE as a valuable new contact thanks to CRS, saying, "[MOORE's] positivity and encouragement is but one example of many such encounters I had in NASHVILLE. CRS was a wonderful reminder that radio has always been, and will always be, about people as much as it is about music." JACKSON had many examples of music experiences at CRS, but said one particular panel stood out that week. "I enjoyed the [EDISON] Smart Speaker and [CMA] Streaming sessions. I think learning to utilize these assets in my world of promotions could be very beneficial to the radio station." Read the entire column here.
