The NEW ZEALAND BREAKERS (a/k/a the SKYCITY BREAKERS under a sponsorship deal) of AUSTRALIA's NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE have new owners, and listed as among the members of the consortium that is taking a majority stake in the club are the hosts and producer of BARSTOOL SPORTS' "PARDON MY TAKE" podcast.
"PMT" hosts DAN "BIG CAT" KATZ and PFT COMMENTER and producer HANK LOCKWOOD are listed by the BREAKERS as being among the partners in a group headed by MATT WALSH, who briefly played for the MIAMI HEAT before a 10-year career in EUROPE and founding an investment group to buy into sports franchises like the ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE's SWANSEA CITY. Also in the ownership group are another SWANSEA CITY partner, ROMIE CHAUDHARI; former longtime NBA player SHAWN MARION; investor ADAM GOODMAN; and the former majority owners, PAUL and LIZ BLACKWELL. The new owners will take over on MARCH 1st, with WALSH relocating to AUCKLAND and the BLACKWELLS staying on with PAUL BLACKWELL remaining on the Board of Directors.
“We were attracted to the club for a number of reasons, they clearly know how to win on the court, with eight playoff appearances in the last 11 years, five grand finals and four championships,” said WALSH. “But our main interest was in the amazing culture that the BLACKWELLS and others have built over that time, combined with the growth of basketball in NEW ZEALAND and being located in the world class city of AUCKLAND.”
“The NBL is one of the best leagues in the world and enjoying record crowds and levels of interest,” added WALSH. “The league is only going to continue to get stronger and we want to be a part of that and help the BREAKERS grow and make the most of the opportunities afforded by being a part of the NBL.”
