WHYY INC. News-Talk WHYY/PHILADELPHIA "VOICES IN THE FAMILY" host Dr. DAN GOTTLIEB is ending his show after 32 years. GOTTLIEB, who had reduced his schedule to six specials a year, decided not to renew his contract when it expires in JULY.
In a message sent to WHYY listeners, GOTTLIEB noted that the show began when WHYY's MARTY MOSS-COANE approached him to do a show, six years after the accident that led to GOTTLIEB's quadriplegia. He described overcoming his terror to complete his first show, and credited the show with teaching him about "the gifts of vulnerability -- what it means to love and be loved by an audience I have never met. It’s taught me about how compassion and safety can come through a microphone. And you will find no other station besides WHYY that would give time, space and resources to such a show."
