CLEAR CHANNEL Gospel WENN (HALLELUJAH 105.5)/BIRMINGHAM flipped to a Rock format on SATURDAY (12/2). Calling itself "105.5 THE VULCAN, BIRMINGHAM'S NEW ROCK STATION," it's jockless and commercial-free so far, with music from PEARL JAM, NIRVANA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, BECK and others heard.
WENN OM TOM HANRAHAN describes the new sound as "a mainstream, gold-based rock property. Its musical center will land around 1997 and will be playing the biggest rock songs from the past 20 years. We will also be sprinkling in two to three tracks an hour from new releases. The station will be targeting men 18-44 and persons 18-34 and will attract the market with great rock songs, but also with its unique irreverence and humor that appeals to men today. MAXIM magazine meets the BIRMINGHAM male."
