JUNE is busting out all over. No, wait, JUNE has busted or been busted and it is now time to reveal its contents. The Ratings Experts from RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC., in a committed relationship with the numbers crunchers from XTRENDS, bring you the latest and greatest in radio ratings, results, and analysis. The aforementioned JUNE thing actually covered 5/24 through 6/20. There was a big, fat holiday weekend in there and stations all across the land were playing ALICE COOPER’S "School’s Out" in occasional rotation. How did that affect the numbers? Read on …
NEW YORK: Gotta Lite?
Though iHEARTMEDIA AC WLTW (LITE) had its lowest 6+ share since NOVEMBER (7.7-7.3), the station still managed to win the demo by a healthy margin. EMMIS Urban AC WBLS moved up to #2 with its best book in over a year (5.7-6.1), but was still over a share off the pace. ENTERCOM Classic Hits WCBS-F saw its string of #2 books end at four as it slipped back to third place (6.3-5.8). iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WHTZ (Z100) had its best outing since FEBRUARY (4.6-5.0) to advance two squares to #4. ENTERCOM News WINS-A dropped back to #5 with its third down book in a row (5.0-4.8). It was just ahead of SBS Tropical WSKQ (MEGA), which moved up to #6 with its highest share since FEBRUARY (4.3-4.7). “All Rise” was not a phrase being uttered in the halls of ENTERCOM Sports WFAN as the station slid to #7 (4.7-4.4). Probably too much winning from the YANKEES.
WLTW kept merrily rolling along as it dominated the 25-54 arena once again. The station was off slightly, but maintained better than a share lead over cluster sibling WHTZ, which moved up to #2 with its highest share in over a year. EMMIS Top 40/R WHQT (HOT) had its fourth straight up book, which moved it up to #3 in the standings. WCBS-F slipped a couple of places to #4 after landing its lowest number since JANUARY. WBLS was up slightly at #5, but was joined in that space by WSKQ, which took two steps upward with its highest score since OCTOBER.
If you were reading between the lines, you probably saw this one coming … WHTZ moved back to #1 18-34 as it got back much of last month’s huge decrease. Meanwhile, iHEARTMEDIA Urban WWPR (POWER) lost a chunk of last month’s big increase and fell back to #2. It was just ahead of its arch nemesis WQHT, which slipped back to #3 as it returned almost all of last survey’s healthy increase. WSKQ was motionless but up at #4 while WLTW remained at #5 as it got back about half of last month’s huge decline. There was surprise movement farther down the list as CUMULUS Country WNSH (NASH) jumped from a tie at #15 to #8 with easily its highest share in over a year.
Last month WLTW took a huge 18-49 hit and saw its market lead dwindle to under a share. The station got a bit of that back this month to remain #1 and extend its lead back to a full share. WQHT was up slightly to remain at #2 and was partnered with WHTZ, which got back all of last month’s loss to take a step forward. WSKQ rose from #6 to #4 with its best outing since FEBRUARY. WWPR moved down a slot to #5 with a small loss while WCBS-F dropped back to #6 with a slightly larger loss.
LOS ANGELES: Oh My My
There was precious little 6+ drama as the top five repeated itself from last month. iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KBIG (MY FM) was #1 for the second book in a row (5.7-5.8) and doubled its lead over #2 iHEARTMEDIA AC KOST (5.6-5.6). (Math. It can be fun and misleading!) ENTERCOM Classic Hits KRTH (K-EARTH) remained in orbit at #3 (5.0-5.1), while ENTERCOM Urban AC KTWV (THE WAVE) was still crashing upon the #4 beach but with its lowest mark since FEBRUARY (4.8-4.5). iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KIIS (KISS) held firm at #5 but with its lowest share since Santa was surfing (4.5-4.3). Here’s a little tidbit to gnaw on. Last month seven (count ‘em) seven stations were tied at #10. That group was down to two this time. Let’s move on …
For the third consecutive survey, KBIG was #1 25-54. The station was flat this time but was still a little more than a share ahead of #2 KOST, which was up slightly. KRTH rose to #3 with a slight increase while ENTERCOM Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK) slipped to #4 with a small decrease. UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE (K-LOVE) remained at #5 with a small decrease. It was tied with KIIS, which moved up despite a slight decrease. No other station was within a half share of these six.
Though KBIG was flat 18-34, the station remained on cruise control by capturing the demo for the third book in a row. MERUELO Top 40/R KPWR (POWER) moved up to #2 with its best showing since SEPTEMBER and cut the deficit to a mere share. KOST slipped back to #3 with its third down book in a row while KIIS held steady at #4 but with its lowest share in over a year. KRTH advanced two squares to #5 with its third straight up book. iHEARTMEDIA Urban KRRL (REAL 92.3) slipped back to #6 with a small decrease. ENTERCOM Top 40/M KAMP (AMP) was not far behind at #7 after posting a solid increase.
This was the sixth straight 18-49 win for KBIG. The station was down slightly but was still over a share ahead of #2 KIIS, which was also off a bit. Two stations moved up and into a tie at #3. KOST took one step forward despite a slight decrease while KRTH was up from a tie at #5 with its highest share since FEBRUARY. KCBS-F dropped to #5 with its first down book since the bells were ringing the sad, sad news. KLVE slipped back to #6 with a slight decrease.
CHICAGO: Winners. We Have Lots And Lots Of Winners!
Everybody gets a demo! Actually, there are only four that we look at each survey and each had a different leader this month. iHEARTMEDIA Urban AC WVAZ (V103) won the 6+ portion for the sixth straight survey and continued to lead the market by a comfortable margin (5.9-6.0). HUBBARD Hot AC WTMX (THE MIX) moved up to #2 as it ended a two-book slide (4.7-4.9). ENTERCOM News WBBM-A slipped back to #3 (4.9-4.8) where it landed in a tie with HUBBARD Classic Rock WDRV (THE DRIVE), which matched its best book in the last year (4.8-4.8). UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO (QUE BUENA) remained at #5 (4.6-4.3) and was just ahead of the stationary CUMULUS Classic Hits WLS-F at #6 (4.3-4.2).
There was a new sheriff in 25-54 town as WTMX moved up to #1 for the first time since NOVEMBER. WOJO saw its two-book run at the top come to an end as the station slipped to #2 with a small decrease. WVAZ stepped back to #3 with a slight decrease and was just ahead of a stationary WDRV, which was up slightly at #4. ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC WBMX (JAMS) held steady at #5 as it ended a two-book slide. No other station was within a half share of these five.
Last month iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WKSC (KISS) led the way 18-34. The station remained on top this time despite giving back all of last month’s huge increase. There is a catch. It was forced to share with iHEARTMEDIA Urban WGCI, which moved up from a tie at #3 despite a slight decrease. WDRV jumped three places to #3 with its sixth straight up book and was this close to making it a three-way tie at #1. CUMULUS Alternative WKQX slipped to #4 as it ended a two-book surge and was tied with WOJO, which dropped back from a tie at #3 with its lowest share since FEBRUARY. Two stations were close behind at #6. WBMX dropped a spot with a slight decrease while ENTERCOM Top 40/M WBBM-F (B96) moved up from #9 with its best performance since NOVEMBER.
Though it was off a bit, WOJO managed to capture the 18-49 flag for the third book in a row. However, WTMX had its best outing since JANUARY to move up to #2 and shrink the gap to under a half share. WKSC slipped back to #3 as it returned all of last month’s solid increase. WBMX remained at #4 with a slight increase and was joined by WDRV, which moved up as it rebounded from last month’s down book. WGCI had a slight increase and was not far behind at #6 while WKQX slipped to #7 with a slight decrease.
SAN FRANCISCO: Same Old Song And Dance
That is kind of a misnomer as the perpetual 6+ leaders do not make their ratings by either singing or dancing. No, they speak for their supper. KQED INC. N/T KQED was #1 for the sixth book in a row but with its lowest share since JULY (8.1-7.1). ENTERCOM News KCBS-A was #2 for the sixth straight survey (5.4-5.5). The next closest pursuer was iHEARTMEDIA AC KISQ (THE BREEZE), which remained at #3 with its highest share in over a year (4.9-5.0). There was a big gap between the top three and the trio of stations at #4.
iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/R KMEL and BONNEVILLE AC KOIT were there last time and both were off slightly this time (3.9-3.8). Joining this group from #7 was BONNEVILLE Top 40/M KMVQ (NOW), which had a solid increase (3.4-3.8). Not far behind were two stations at #7. CUMULUS Sports KNBR-A was off slightly (3.7-3.6) while ENTERCOM Hot AC KLLC (ALICE) ended a four-book slide (3.3-3.6).
Last month KQED had a big gain to remain #1 25-54. This time the station lost all of that added share but still maintained a dominant #1 position. KLLC repeated at #2 with a slight increase while iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KYLD (WILD) moved up to #3 with its best outing since SEPTEMBER. KMEL remained at #4 with a slight increase but had a new partner in KMVQ, which advanced two spaces with a slight increase. KISQ fell three spots to #6 with a slight decrease.
KMEL continued to have its way with the 18-34 demo after notching its ninth win in a row. iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KIOI (STAR) moved up three slots to #2 with its best book in over a year and still trailed the leader by over three shares. KMVQ moved up to #3 as it regained some of last month’s big loss. KYLD dropped back to #4 with a slight decrease. ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC KRBQ (Q102) dropped to #5 as it returned all of last month’s big increase. Close behind at #6 was iHEARTMEDIA Classic Hits KOSF, which has more than doubled its share over the last two months.
The top two 18-49 stations swapped spaces for the second book in a row. KMEL was back at #1 despite a slight decrease while KQED fell back to #2 as it returned a good portion of last month’s huge increase. KLLC didn’t budge from the #3 spot and got back all of last month’s loss. KMVQ moved up to #4 as it also bounced back from a down book while KIOI advanced to #5 with its best outing since FEBRUARY. KISQ slid to #6 with a slight decrease where it was tied with KYLD, which rose a spot with a small increase. KRBQ dropped four places to a tie at #9 as it lost all of last month’s gain.
DALLAS-FT. WORTH: Kiss Is King
This will be the fourth book in a row that iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KHKS (KISS) captured all four demos. And, it all starts with 6+ where the station ended a three-book run (6.9-6.3) but still held a comfortable lead over iHEARTMEDIA Classic Rock KZPS (LONE STAR) at #2 (5.5-5.3). CUMULUS Country KSCS remained at #3 (4.6-4.7) but became entangled with iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KDMX (NOW), which jumped in from #8 with its best book since DECEMBER (3.8-4.7). ENTERCOM Classic Hits KLUV (K-LOVE) slid to #5 (4.5-4.5) while CUMULUS Country KPLX (THE WOLF) dropped to #6 (4.2-4.2).
KHKS saw its three-book run of up 25-54 books come to an end, but the station still captured the demo for the sixth month in a row. KDMX made the move of the month as it rose from a tie at #8 to #2 with its highest share since AUGUST. Still, it was more than a share off the lead. KSCS remained at #3 with a slight decrease and was forced to share with KZPS, which moved up from #5 just by being flat. UNIVISION Regional Mexican KLNO (QUE BUENA) moved up to #5 with its own flat performance while iHEARTMEDIA Active Rock KEGL (THE EAGLE) fell three places to #6 with its first down book since JANUARY. CUMULUS Sports KTCK-A (THE TICKET) dropped from #2 to a tie at #8 as it lost a rather large chunk of share.
KHKS was up 18-34 for the fourth straight survey and posted its largest number in over a year. KEGL remained at #2 and, despite landing its best share in over a year, the station was over a share and a half off the lead. KSCS remained at #3 with its fourth straight up book but, as we saw in previous demos, it was forced to share the moment. UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KDXX (LATINO MIX) moved up from #8 with what was easily its best book in over a year. KDMX rose four places to #5 with its best showing since AUGUST. The two previous occupants of the #4 position went their separate ways. SERVICE Urban KKDA (K104) dropped to #6 with a small decrease while ENTERCOM Regional Mexican KMVK (LA GRANDE) dropped to #10 with its lowest mark since JANUARY.
As with the previous three demos, the race was for second place because KHKS continued to dominate the 18-49 sphere. The station was off slightly and KDMX moved up to #2 with its best book in over a year, so the gap was narrowed to under a share and a half. KEGL slipped to #3 with a slight decrease while KSCS moved up to #4 with a slight increase. KLNO took two steps forward to #5 as it regained all of last month’s loss. KDXX was close behind as it jumped from #14 to #6.
