COX ENTERPRISES, INC. is exploring the sale of COX MEDIA GROUP's 14 TV stations, the company announced TODAY (7/24). The release stressed that the company plans to continue to operate its radio stations and newspapers.
"We didn't take this decision lightly. It is clear that scale is critical for TV affiliates to be positioned well for the future. Our stations are some of the best in the industry and we want them to stay that way," said Pres.CEO ALEX TAYLOR. "Because the TV portfolio is the largest portion of COX MEDIA GROUP’s assets, this decision may impact other parts of COX MEDIA GROUP and we will evaluate those situations as the process unfolds ... We estimate that this process will take well into next year before completion."
"COX's television stations are and will always be an important part of our company's history, and we greatly value the contributions of these stations to the success of our company and to the communities where we do business," said Chairman JIM KENNEDY. "We are deeply appreciative of the employees at these stations and their dedication to delivering quality, consistent and trustworthy journalism."
The 14 stations are ABC affiliates WSB-TV/ATLANTA. WFTV (TV)/ORLANDO, and WSOC-TV/CHARLOTTE; Independents WRDQ-TV/CHARLOTTE and WAXN-TV/CHARLOTTE; NBC affiliate WPXI-TV/PITTSBURGH; CBS affiliates WHIO-TV/DAYTON, KIRO-TV/SEATTLE, and (under a management agreement) WJAX-TV/JACKSONVILLE; FOX affiliates WFOX-TV/JACKSONVILLE, WFXT-TV/BOSTON, WHBQ-TV/MEMPHIS, and KOKI-TV/TULSA; and MY NETWORK TV affiliate KMYT-TV/TULSA.
