AMAZON's AUDIBLE is changing its strategy regarding original podcasts, and as a result, SVP/Original Content Development ERIC NUZUM is exiting the company and several staffers at AUDIBLE ORIGINALS are also leaving, according to reporting by NICK QUAH at HOTPOD. The layoffs last THURSDAY (8/2) include the entire unit responsible for original spoken-word podcast content, according to a report by NEDA ULABY late last week on NPR. QUAH adds that NUZUM, the former NPR executive, informed the remaining staff of his pending departure in an email on MONDAY (8/6).
AUDIBLE ORIGINALS released some high-profile shows in its short existence, including JON RONSON's "THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT" and ESTER PEREL's "WHERE DO I BEGIN?" The company has more recently shifted to signing major authors to audiobook-first deals.
