CBS Sports WIP-A/PHILADELPHIA's annual "WING BOWL" sold out all available tickets within a day of the event going on sale MONDAY morning. The chicken-wing-eating event (plus the "WINGETTE" beauty pageant), launched by the station's morning show 15 years ago, will be held on FEBRUARY 2 at the home of the SIXERS and FLYERS, the 20,000-seat WACHOVIA CENTER. WIP will be giving away tickets on ANGELO CATALDI's morning show and at special events, starting with THURSDAY's kick-off "WING OFF" appearance at LANDMARK AMERICANA TAP AND GRILLE in GLASSBORO, NJ.
On MONDAY's show, CATALDI and co-hosts AL MORGANTI (whose decision on stunts by would-be WING BOWL competitors is always the final word) and RHEA HUGHES welcomed the first announced competitors in this year's "PHILLY VS. THE WORLD" competition, legendary "professional eater" SONYA "THE BLACK WIDOW" THOMAS and local competitor "HUMBLE BOB" SHOUDTS. Former SIXERS Pres. PAT CROCE was named MONDAY to replace the late ERIC GREGG as the event's Commissioner, promising to study the WING BOWL rulebook (prompting HUGHES to ask, "You think we write this down?").
