The FCC released a Second Further Notice Of Proposed Rule Making (SFNPRM) on AM revitalization last FRIDAY (10/5) that offers a new proposal for the protection of Class A AM stations during daylight hours and two alternative proposals for protection of Class A AM stations at night.
The Commission is seeking comment on a proposal to reduce protection of Class A stations during daytime hours to their 0.5 mV/m contour by co-channel and first adjacent channel stations ; on Alternative 1, which eliminates all critical hours protections and prohibits overlap between a Class A AM station’s 0.5 mV/m nighttime groundwave contour and any interfering AM station’s 0.025 mV/m 10 percent skywave contour at night using the single station method; and Alternative 2, which offers critical hours protections to the 0.5 mV/m groundwave contour and protects the Class As at night to the greater of the 0.5 mV/m nighttime groundwave contour or the 50 percent exclusion RSS NIF level using the multiple station method. Comments will be due 60 days after publication of the SFNPRM in the Federal Register, with replies due 90 days after publication.
