ENTERCOM Sports WFAN-A-F/NEW YORK afternoon host MIKE FRANCESA's comments on the dispute between MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, JAMES DOLAN and ENTERCOM (NET NEWS 10/22) grabbed the attention of NEW YORK-area sports media writers, raising speculation that FRANCESA may not have a solid deal with ENTERCOM, but the host later criticized the coverage while continuing to raise questions about his deal and his subscription mobile app.
The comment that caught the media's ear came at the end of FRANCESA's defense of MSG and DOLAN and criticism of MSG's PR offensive against ENTERCOM in the conflict, when the host said of himself and ENTERCOM, "We haven't even come to a deal yet, which makes me think that maybe the app and the show don't work together, and maybe that's something we're going to have to adjust, one way or the other. We're going to have to wait and see about that, because we still don't have a deal. So maybe it's not the right -- maybe the app and this show can't work together. That's possible. And if it is, we'll adjust one."
Responding to NEWARK STAR-LEDGER/NJ.com writer JAMES KRATCH's coverage of the comments, FRANCESA later called KRATCH "dense" and added, "OK, what I said was, that it could be that I came back to build the app, which is my project, and have it work in concert with WFAN, and maybe I was wrong. Maybe they can't work, maybe there is a conflict, that's why we haven't been able to make a deal." ENTERCOM, he said, has "nothing to do" with the app and wants to buy into the app ownership, but that the app is owned by MIKE'S ON LLC (himself and CAA) and "the app is going nowhere ... and if anything leaves, it will not be the 'MIKE'S ON' app ... (but) to utilize this show to promote the app may be something that doesn't work as well as I had hoped it did."
FRANCESA closed by challenging the media, which he said do not understand the app, to check with CAA on the success of the app and added, "The other part? We'll see what happens. Now, see if you can figure it now. Now that I've took you there, I've left the crumbs for you, let's see if you can put the pieces together without screwing it up." The last comments fueled even more speculation that FRANCESA may be planning to leave WFAN again in favor of the app.
