MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO is selling the FITZGERALD THEATER in downtown ST. PAUL to FIRST AVENUE, the nightclub operator that owns the famed MINNEAPOLIS venue FIRST AVENUE AND 7TH STREET ENTRY, for an undisclosed price.
FIRST AVENUE announced the purchase of the theater, built in 1910 and the site from which "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION" was produced for several years, in a tweet WEDNESDAY:
Just announced: First Avenue has entered an agreement to purchase the Fitzgerald Theater from MPR.
Our goal is to bring together people with diverse interests and backgrounds, part of that is expanding the First Avenue family to include other venues throughout the Twin Cities.
— First Avenue (@FirstAvenue) October 24, 2018FIRST AVENUE also operates several other venues in the TWIN CITIES, including a co-operation arrangement at the PALACE THEATER in ST PAUL. MPR bought the FITZ, then the WORLD THEATER, in 1980 and renamed it after F. SCOTT FITZGERALD in 1994.
