Amidst the incredible devastation of the Camp Fire in northern CALIFORNIA, one survivor's story led ENTERCOM Sports KHTK-A (SPORTS 1140)/SACRAMENTO morning "THE DRIVE" host CARMICHAEL DAVE to start an impromptu relief effort that may grow into something bigger.
After DAVE saw a story on local TV news about a tall man named DAN displaced by the fire that destroyed PARADISE, CA and who was without a change of clothes and shoes for his 6'8" frame, sleeping in a too-small tent in a WALMART parking lot in CHICO, the host, noting that DAN wears the same size pants as he does, decided to bring some items to DAN and asked listeners to bring other items to the station parking lot and drop them into DAVE's truck. DAVE put DAN on the air with afternoon hosts GRANT NAPEAR and DOUG CHRISTIE to tell his story; Seeing the conditions at the CHICO WALMART led DAVE to make a video imploring listeners to do just one thing to help, reasoning that if everyone did one thing, the collective result would make a difference.
The video spawned the "Do One Thing Challenge," and on FRIDAY morning, a caravan of vehicles will depart from the station and make the long drive to CHICO to deliver needed items to the fire victims. (DAVE himself, hit hard by the norovirus making the rounds, may not be healthy enough to make the drive this morning; KYLE MADSON and MATT GEORGE filled in YESTERDAY.) The movement, which DAVE tells ALL ACCESS is still in the grassroots stages right now, may be extended over the coming weeks and months to include partner organizations, fundraisers, volunteering, labor, and other elements comprising a relief effort. He warns that, typically, the public's focus seems to dissipate as the disaster recedes into memory, but the need for relief not only goes on but can intensify well after the fires are contained.
I just want to say how amazed and humbled i always am any time our community is asked to respond. It never fails.
There’s no place I’d rather be from than Sacramento.
