The scaling back of TAGSTATION and NEXTRADIO by EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS has led to the year-end firing of 35 staffers, reports the INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL. TAGSTATION and NEXTRADIO President PAUL BRENNER will remain with EMMIS, but the 35 staffers were informed last week that they are being let go.
A written statement from EMMIS CEO JEFF SMULYAN said that the terminated workers will get “generous severance packages” and that the company will provide "certain product support and maintenance" for NEXTRADIO and TAGSTATION "for the foreseeable future.”
SMULYAN announced in an OCTOBER press release that the company would "dramatically reduce the operations" of NEXTRADIO and TAGSTATION because it was "unwilling and unable to continue to fund the NEXTRADIO and TAGSTATION businesses as they are currently structured." On a subsequent conference call, he added that "we couldn't afford to fund R&D for the entire industry."
