Don';t tell W & B BROADCASTING Classic Hits WAKY/LOUISVILLE, KY, that FRANK LOESSER'S classic 1944 holiday song, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," is a #MeToo-inspired metaphor for date rape.
After ENTERCOM AC WDOK (CHRISTMAS 102.1)/CLEVELAND abruptly pulled it from the air last month, it has ignited a controversy about the song's meaning in light of the recent feminist-inspired movement.
WAKY PD JOE FREDALE told a radio interviewer the station has been playing the song for years. "It's older than WAKY is." he said. "It's almost 70 years old."
This past SUNDAY, WAKY played versions of the song continuously from 8a to 10a (CT).
Many listeners thanked the station for taking a stand onthe song.
"It's just a fun way of saying, 'Hey, this is our vote for that song,":says FREDALE. "It's a fun song, it's a romantic song. Don't pick on it.
"The song is just a dialogue between a man and a woman, and at the end of the song, you hear them harmonize together, so they're agreeing basically."
WDOK host DESIRAY responded, "If you really listen to the lyrics. The tune might be catchy but let's maybe not promote that sort of an idea."
