STEVE DODGE, the founder of AMERICAN RADIO SYSTEMS, AMERICAN TOWER, AMERICAN CABLESYSTEMS, and real estate firm WINDOVER DEVELOPMENT LLC, died WEDNESDAY night (1/16) in a bicycle-car accident in BONITA SPRINGS, FL, reports CBS affiliate WINK-TV/FORT MYERS. DODGE was 73; police told WINK that he was riding his bike and made an illegal crossing into traffic, where he was hit by a car from behind.
DODGE, a YALE graduate, worked with cable television company loans at BANK BOSTON before deciding to strike out on his own, forming AMERICAN CABLESYSTEM and selling the company in 1988 to CONTINENTAL CABLE for $450 million. He then formed AMERICAN RADIO SYSTEMS and built that company into one of the industry's leading ownership groups before selling to CBS in 1998. AMERICAN TOWER CORP. was spun off separately from ARS; DODGE launched WINDOVER in 2003, with developments in MASSACHUSETTS and FLORIDA.
