RTDNF Names 2019 First Amendment Award Honorees

The RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS FOUNDATION has named the recipients of its 29th annual First Amendment Awards, to be handed out on MARCH 13th in WASHINGTON.
The honorees include:
- First Amendment Award: CNN
- First Amendment Service Award: JAMES GOLDSTON, ABC NEWS
- First Amendment Leadership Award: DAVID BEGNAUD, CBS NEWS
- LEONARD ZEIDENBERG First Amendment Award: SHEPARD SMITH, FOX NEWS CHANNEL
- Lifetime Achievement Award: DALE HANSEN, TEGNA ABC affiliate WFAA-TV/DALLAS
- First Amendment Clarity Award: 2018 “Road Warriors” of NBC NEWS
- Citation of Courage: the late JAMAL KHASHOGGI, THE WASHINGTON POST
- Citation of Courage: Journalists of the CAPITAL GAZETTE, ANNAPOLIS, MD, including those killed in the JUNE 28, 2018 shootings, GERALD FISCHMAN, ROB HIAASEN, JOHN MCNAMARA, REBECCA SMITH, and WENDI WINTERS
“Over the last year, journalists have faced increasing, active assault by people in positions of power, including physical attacks while on the job, banishment from the WHITE HOUSE, bomb threats, assassination and even murder,” said Exec. Dir. DAN SHELLEY. “Yet they have persisted in their commitments to public service, reporting without fear or favor, serving their hometown communities and the country by providing key context to important public questions and producing winning coverage to uphold the public’s right to know and make more informed decisions for themselves.”
