A COMSCORE NETWORKS study of iTUNES transactions shows a year-to-year sales increase of 64% in the first three quarters of 2006, with unique visitors to the iTUNES MUSIC STORE up 80%, in sharp contrast to a report issued by FORRESTER RESEARCH earlier in the week showing a 65% decline in sales at iTUNES for the first six months of the year.
The FORRESTER study drew widespread skepticism from industry analysts and a denial from APPLE, and a study by PIPER JAFFRAY showed sales up 78% through SEPTEMBER; FORRESTER on WEDNESDAY suggested, in a note on analyst JOSH BERNOFF's blog, that the number of purchases counted in its report were too few to draw the conclusion that sales are "plummeting" but that "iTUNES sales are leveling off... APPLE is not in trouble-- it makes its money mostly from iPODs, and iTUNES is just a way to make that experience better. It's the music industry that has to worry...."
